  • Symposium on Human Interface (Japan) 2009
  • 8th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics
  • 5th International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction
  • 3rd International Conference on Virtual and Mixed Reality
  • 3rd International Conference on Internationalization, Design and Global Development
  • 3rd International Conference on Online Communities and Social Computing
  • 5th International Conference on Augmented Cognition
  • 2nd International Conference on Digital Human Modeling
  • 1st International Conference on Human Centered Design

A truly international event, with 75% of its participants coming from outside the USA, HCI International 2009 was held under the auspices of the distinguished international boards of 262 members from 35 countries. It was one of the bigger events organized in the fields related to Human-Computer Interaction and Information Society Technologies, and attracted an impressive number of over 1900 participants from 73 countries, representing the research and academic communities, as well as industry.

The Conference Program was organized into 11 thematic areas, namely Ergonomics and Health Aspects of Work with Computers, Human Interface and the Management of Information, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics, Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, Virtual and Mixed Reality, Internationalization, Design and Global Development, Online Communities and Social Computing, Augmented Cognition, Digital Human Modeling, and Human Centered Design.

The program featured a plenary session, 215 parallel paper sessions, 22 tutorials, and 209 poster presentations. The keynote speaker was Daniel Rosenberg, Senior Vice President, Product User Experience, Office of the CTO, SAP Corporation, USA. His enlightening talk entitled "The Industrialization of Sustainability: Future roles, responsibilities and opportunities for the HCI profession", addressed the role of HCI in the context of sustainability and the global economy.

During the Opening Plenary Session, on the 21st of July 2009, for the first time in the history of the HCI International Conference series, fourteen awards were conferred.

Eleven awards were given to the best papers in each Affiliated Conference / Thematic Area. The winners received a plaque and a certificate. Among these eleven best papers, one paper was selected as Best HCI International 2009 Conference paper. The winner, the paper entitled "The User Knows: Considering the Cognitive Contribution of the User in the Design of Auditory Warnings" by Catherine Stevens and Agnes Petocz from the University of Western Sydney, Australia, was announced during the Opening Plenary Session, and received a golden medal award and a certificate. An honorable mention certificate was also awarded to the runner up (2nd Best) Paper, entitled "BC(eye)- Combining Eye-Gaze Input with Brain-Computer Interaction" by Roman Vilimek from Siemens AG, Germany, and Thorsten Zander from Berlin University of Technology, Germany. Furthermore, a Best Poster award (plaque and certificate) was also conferred to the best poster extended abstract.

Professor Gavriel Salvendy, founder of the HCI International Conference and scientific advisor to HCII2009, received a silver medal in celebration of the 25th (Silver) anniversary and in recognition and appreciation of his protagonist role in the HCI International conference series.

The Conference Proceedings have been published by Springer in the LNCS/LNAI series, and consist of 17 volumes containing 1397 papers in total by 4110 authors. The Proceedings are also available on–line through the SpringerLink Digital Library, readily accessible by all subscribing libraries around the world.

Springer also produced, for exclusive distribution to conference participants, a DVD version of the HCII 2009 proceedings. This DVD was released with ISBN 978-3-642-02884-7 and included, in addition to the proceedings papers, the extended abstracts of the posters presented during the HCII 2009 conference. The DVD is not available for purchase.
